What's with the hyper-sensitivity lately?

Why has the world suddenly gone so much crazier lately? Have we lost our sense of humor with the passing of Ronald Reagan? I'm talking about the harsh criticism of Jimmy Kimmel and Larry Bird. On the "Jimmy Kimmel Show," host Jimmy Kimmel made the following remark about the NBA Finals featuring the L.A. Lakers vs. the Detroit Pistons: "I'm glad the Lakers are winning because besides the fact that I'm a Lakers fan, I realize they're gonna burn the city of Detroit down if the Pistons win, and it's not worth it." Now, aside from the fact that Kimmel is a Lakers fan (har, har), I find nothing offensive about this quote. The ABC network however, decided to pull the entire show off the air. Seriously people, it's not like he's encouraging riots, he's just playing on the fact that Detroit has had some rather, uh, "rough" celebrations in the past when their teams have won championships. It's not like Detroit's reputation isn't well known. It's a rough town. Of course, it was nice to see Kimmel get the last jab in his 'apology'... "What I said about Pistons fans during halftime last night was a joke, nothing more. If I offended anyone I am sorry. Clearly over the past 10 years, we in L.A. have taken a commanding lead in post-game riots. If the Lakers win, I hope to overturn my own car." Now, on to Larry Bird. Obviously there remains much sensitivity regarding the race issue. However, the headlines I'm seeing are truly appalling. Fox Sports' headline read "Bird says NBA needs more white stars." Wow, after reading that, I'm almost pissed at Larry Bird. But then you read the actual interview, and hopefully you draw the correct conclusion. Now, let's look at what he REALLY said... "You know when I played, you had me and Kevin (McHale) and some others throughout the league." Bird said. "I think it's good for a fan base because as we all know the majority of the fans are white America." I cringe at the "white America" statement, but what he says is valid. He's encouraging diversity in the league, and what's wrong with that? Why is it OK to say, "we need more women in the workplace" or "we need more African-Americans in school", but to say "we need more white players in basketball" is appalling and insensitive? "And if you just had a couple of white guys in there, you might get them a little excited. But it is a black man's game, and it will be forever. I mean, the greatest athletes in the world are African-American." How much clearer or complimentary could that statement have been? African-Americans are the greatest athletes in the world. Come on America, seriously, lighten up.

Summer At Last

Just a quick note to wish everyone a safe and happy summer season. For me it has gotten off to a busy start. I'm hoping to get a lot of tennis in and spend some much needed time with friends and family. Cheers.

The weekend is over already?!

Wow, I can't believe it is Sunday evening already. It seems like the weekend just can't be long enough during the spring and summer months. At least I had a productive weekend. I posted a new and "controversial" feature as well as a long overdue CD review. I've also started researching a religious feature that I hope to post soon as well. When I started this web site, I thought it would be a place to post my light-hearted, often comical ramblings. For some reason, they haven't been very humorous lately, and I don't know why. Maybe I'm starting to take life too seriously? Anyway, hope all is well with you and yours. Take a look around and drop me a message when you have a minute. I'm off to bed.

Where Are the Junk Mail Junkies?

Where are the people that make spam mail profitable? I want to find them and knock them upside the head and find out why they would support this revolting trend in advertising. I won't open spam on principal, it could have the most enticing subject line and be totally true..."Yes, you Kevin can drop 50 lbs, date the girl of your dreams, become independently wealthy, and effect world peace...Just by opening this e-mail." Nope... Not going to open it... Even if it's for world peace. Well, maybe...I'd think about it then. It was a frustrating day today. I have a million things to do, and then to be stricken with a condition I can do nothing about (migraine headaches). I don't have time for this! It's a bummer when your body fails you. I guess I should feel blessed in the fact that it doesn't fail on me often...Just at the worst possible times.

The More Things Change, The More they Stay the Same...Er, Not Really.

It's that time of year again, tax time. You would think I would learn my lesson, but I don't. Once again I have put it off to the last minute. Of course, this year's return is already as good as spent... damn dentists... I did a little spring cleaning today and came across an old family photo album. I browsed through photos dating back to my formative years. Old pictures absolutely fascinate me. All those moments frozen in time for years- possibly a lifetime. They can also be scary, as I find it difficult to see the people I care about getting older. I turned 25 this past November, and even though I'm "young", my teenage years seem to have occurred long ago. It's quite disturbing to think that my 20's are half over. Never forget where you come from, but never lose focus on where you're going...

Like A Thief In The Night..State Farm Is There

I had a busy weekend so I neglected my web log... It's unfortunate, because a lot has happened. Thursday night we had a barbecue for my friend Dan. I hadn't talked to Dan in over two years as we had some "issues" come between us. I've had quite a lot of time to think on it, and it just seems plain ridiculous to have lost that time over something trivial. I honestly don't even remember exactly what happened. I'm just glad that we were able to all get together and throw one hell of a party. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding Dan! I'll be out to Vegas as soon as I can. In other news, insurance companies suck. After 23 years of flawless dental hygiene, my dentist encountered a problem... A problem that has cost me almost $2000 and counting. My insurance company, who I have loyally been paying for four years with relatively little benefit, is now refusing to cover most of the work I need done...What the hell good are they??? And here's an interesting thought, why in the blue hell do I need to see three different dentists and schedule six different appointments? Why can't one dentist go to school and learn everything so they can fix it right and stop wasting my time? Anyone? Actually, I like my regular dentist... It's the specialists that just keep taking my money....

Leaf Blowers And Neighbors That Don't Blow

ahh, the weekend is over and it's time to get back to the grind. I'm actually feeling ready for a Monday..and that never happens. I finished cleaning out all the sticks and leaves from the rock bed in the backyard. I started with an air compressor and the small air gun. That wasn't working so hot, but it was better than doing it by hand. Then my neighbor showed up with the wonderful idea of using her leaf blower. MUCH BETTER. It feels weird borrowing things from people I hardly know. This neighbor has been nothing but nice since the day I met her. It's comforting to know there are people like that in the world, especially when they live right next door.

Tackling Obstacles

Ever have one of those days where you get everything done and then some? Yes, what great days they can be. Spring is here, and it's time to do some yardwork. I'm actually kind of excited considering it's MY yard. There was this hideous looking old tree in the backyard. It has obviously been dead for quite sometime and at some point it had begun to lean. It was leaning over so badly that rather than growiing "up" it was growing across..sprawling a good 10 feet across the yard. I grabbed a saw and decided to do battle with the old, dead tree, however the tree would not go down without a fight. I now have an 8-inch gash across my left calf. It bled profusely but after much twisting, turning, sawing, hacking, yelling and swearing the tree is gone. I declared myself the victor of "Lawn Maintenance Matchup, Round One" and went in the house for a congratulatory beer." Stay tuned for more sportsfans as there is a long summer ahead...

Busier than Martha Stewart's lawyer

Happy St. Patrick's day! To those of you celebrating the greenest day of the year, play it safe! As for me, the green brew I drank way too much of four years ago has permanently tainted this festive day for me. The thought of green beer makes me sick to my stomach. Moving on to other things, I have obviously taken quite the hiatus for which, I apologize. I suppose now is a good time to recap all that has happened since then. 1. Martha Stewart has resigned as a boardmember of her company to begin the next phase of her career...yeah.... 2. Radio and television personalities are dropping like flies following Janet Jackson's little "slip" during the Superbowl halftime show. Ah, we must preserve the important institution of censorship at all costs... 3. I have continued to resist the urge to post additional pictures to the web site... It's my own lazy fault, but who would have thought I could hold out this long??? Anyway, in honor of St. Patty, here's a limerick... There once was a man from El Pass Whose balls were made out of brass During bad weather He'd rub them together And shoot lightning straight out of his ass.

Back In Action!

Last weekend I decided to transfer my web sites to a new hosting company. This will save me quite a bit of money and I have a chance to explore some newer technology on my web sites. There is nothing worse than the feeling that you are becoming obsolete, particularly in the IT field. I've decided to really take some time to learn Microsoft SQL server, and this web site will be my "playground" of sorts. Stay tuned, I hope good things will come shortly. Tomorrow I leave for Seattle, I got my site back up so hopefully I can create some posts while I'm gone. I'll be sure to post pics of my trip and a full report when I get back to Colorado on Tuesday.
